When You Need Mulching Services

Newly planted trees benefit from mulch immediately to conserve moisture during the critical establishment period. Established trees growing in compacted lawn areas, parking strips, or high-traffic zones benefit from annual mulch application to improve soil structure over time. Vancouver's summer drought conditions — often six to eight weeks with minimal rainfall from July through August — make moisture retention particularly important.

Our Mulching Process

We assess the site to determine mulch type, volume, and application depth. For trees, we apply a 7 to 10 cm layer of organic mulch in a ring extending from 15 cm away from the trunk out to the drip line or as far as practical. The gap between mulch and trunk is critical — mulch piled against bark holds moisture against the cambium and promotes decay, a common mistake called volcano mulching.

For garden beds and borders, we spread mulch evenly at 5 to 7 cm depth, pulling it back from the base of shrubs and perennials. Existing old mulch is raked and redistributed before new material is added to avoid excessive buildup. We source mulch from our own tree service operations when possible, providing fresh arborist wood chips that are an effective and sustainable mulch source.
