What You Need to Know
Tree pruning in Vancouver, done correctly, keeps a tree healthy, structurally sound, and safe near homes and lines. Aesthetic Tree's ISA-certified arborists prune to the ANSI A300 standard — crown cleaning to remove dead and diseased wood, crown thinning to let light and wind through, and crown reduction to pull a canopy back from a roof or power line. We never top trees and never lion-tail them, because both damage the tree and create future hazards. Most pruning is best done in Vancouver's dormant season, late fall through early spring, with timing exceptions for flowering and heavy-bleeding species. Every job is backed by $5M liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage.

What Tree Pruning Covers in Vancouver
Tree pruning Vancouver property owners need covers three main jobs, and a good arborist knows which one a tree actually requires. Crown cleaning removes dead, diseased, and broken branches — the deadwood that drops in storms. Crown thinning selectively removes live branches to let more light and wind move through the canopy. Crown reduction shortens the canopy to pull it back from a roof, a wall, or a power line.
Each cut is made at the branch collar, the natural point where a tree seals a wound, and the volume removed is kept within what the tree can recover from in a season. Our ISA-certified arborists prune to the ANSI A300 standard — the industry standard for how, where, and how much to cut.
Pruning is not the same as cutting a tree down or felling it. It is the ongoing care that keeps a tree worth keeping — structurally sound, healthy, and safe in an urban yard, and it overlaps closely with routine tree trimming for shape and clearance.
Why We Never Top Trees
Topping — cutting a tree's main stems back to stubs — is still the most common form of bad pruning in Vancouver, and it is the one our arborists will not do. Topping removes most of a tree's leaf area at once, starves it of energy, and exposes large wounds that decay rather than seal.
A topped tree responds with a dense flush of weakly attached shoots called water sprouts. Those sprouts grow fast, are poorly anchored, and are far more likely to fail in a storm than the original branches. Topping does not make a tree safer — it makes it more hazardous within a few years, and it shortens the tree's life. Our blog covers the alternatives to tree topping, and where a tree has already been topped, crown restoration can rebuild its structure.
Lion-tailing — stripping the inner branches and leaving foliage only at the branch tips — is the other damaging practice we avoid. It overloads the branch ends and weakens limb structure. Proper crown thinning and reduction achieve the goal of a smaller, lighter canopy without either of these shortcuts.

When to Prune Trees in Vancouver
For most trees in Vancouver, the dormant season — roughly November through March — is the best time to prune. With the leaves down, an arborist can read the branch structure clearly, the tree is not spending energy on growth, and the risk of spreading disease through fresh cuts is lowest. The tree puts its spring energy into sealing the cuts and pushing healthy new growth.
There are timing exceptions. Flowering ornamentals such as cherry, magnolia, and dogwood are pruned right after they bloom, so next year's flower buds are not removed. Heavy-bleeding species like birch and maple are best pruned once the leaves are fully out, in summer. Dead and clearly hazardous branches are removed at any time of year.
Our arborists time pruning to the specific tree rather than doing every tree on one date, often as part of a year-round seasonal tree care plan. The free assessment confirms what each tree needs and the right season to do it.
