how do you know if your tree has a pest problem?

01

How Do You Know If Your Tree Has a Pest Problem?

Trees rarely announce a pest problem overnight. The signs are subtle at first: yellowing leaves in summer, sticky residue on leaves or paving below the canopy, premature leaf drop, fine webbing in the canopy, D-shaped exit holes in the bark, or unusual swellings on branches. By the time a tree looks visibly sick, the infestation has often been active for a full growing season.

The most reliable early warning sign in Greater Vancouver is leaf discoloration outside of fall. If your birch leaves are yellowing in July, your horse chestnut has dark blotches in August, or your cedar has browning patches spreading inward through the canopy — these are signals worth having a certified arborist assess before the problem escalates.

Our ISA-certified arborists perform a systematic assessment: canopy health from the ground, bark and cambium inspection where needed, soil sampling for root health indicators, and review of site conditions (drainage, compaction, construction history). We give you a diagnosis and a specific treatment plan — not a generic spray program.

Common Tree Insects and Pests in Greater Vancouver

Greater Vancouver's temperate climate supports a number of insect species that damage urban trees. The most significant: Aphids (multiple species) attack birch, maple, and ornamental trees — secreting honeydew that turns into sooty mold. A single aphid colony can number in the millions by mid-summer. Bronze Birch Borer is the most lethal insect pest for birch trees in BC. The beetle larvae tunnel under bark, cutting off water and nutrient transport. By the time the canopy shows dieback, the infestation has often been active for 2-3 years. Early intervention is critical.

Western Tent Caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum pluviale) defoliates cherry, alder, and apple trees in mass outbreaks every 6-10 years in the Lower Mainland. Trees can survive one defoliation; repeated events weaken the tree to secondary infections. Scale insects (multiple species) appear as waxy or armored bumps on twigs and branches. Light infestations cause leaf yellowing; heavy ones cause dieback. Dogwood Anthracnose is a fungal pathogen that has devastated ornamental dogwood populations across BC. Brown spots with purple borders on leaves progress to twig dieback and can kill the tree within 3-5 years without treatment.

Exotic invasive pests are an increasing concern in BC. Spotted Lanternfly has not yet established in British Columbia but is moving west from Ontario. Spongy Moth (formerly Gypsy Moth) periodically establishes in Metro Vancouver and is subject to provincial aerial spray programs. Asian Longhorned Beetle, if introduced, would be catastrophic for Vancouver's urban forest. If you notice unusual insects on your trees, photograph them and report to the BC Ministry of Forests before disturbing them.

How to Protect Trees From Pests and Disease

The most effective pest protection is a healthy tree. Stressed trees — from drought, waterlogging, compacted soil, construction damage, or improper pruning — are the first targets for opportunistic insects and fungal pathogens. Our plant health care program starts with site assessment and corrective treatments to restore tree vigour before applying any pesticides.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the standard we follow: identify the specific pest, establish whether treatment is warranted based on damage threshold, select the least-toxic effective treatment, apply at the correct timing in the pest's lifecycle, and monitor outcomes. This approach reduces pesticide use, protects pollinators and beneficial insects, and achieves better long-term results than calendar-based spray programs.

Preventive treatments are available for high-value trees in known pest corridors. Bronze Birch Borer preventive trunk injections are effective when applied before visible dieback and can extend the life of birch trees in areas where the beetle is active. Dormant oil applications in late winter smother overwintering scale insects and aphid eggs before they hatch. Fungicide treatments for dogwood anthracnose are most effective applied at bud break in spring.

Common Questions

FAQ

Everything you need to know about our tree pest control vancouver services.

Have a specific question?

(604) 721-7370Send Us a Message
01How do I know if my tree has a pest problem or a disease?

Insects and disease often look similar from the ground. Common pest signs: visible insects, exit holes in bark, sticky honeydew, webbing in canopy. Common disease signs: leaf spots with defined borders, cankers on bark, white powdery coating, or dieback following a wet season. An ISA-certified arborist can diagnose both accurately on-site. Call (604) 721-7370 for an assessment.

02Can a tree recover from a pest infestation?

It depends on the pest, the tree species, and how long the infestation has been active. Aphid infestations are rarely fatal if treated promptly. Bronze Birch Borer damage is often irreversible once 40-50% of the canopy shows dieback. Fungal diseases caught early can be managed. The earlier we intervene, the better the prognosis.

03Do you use pesticides?

We use pesticides as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach — only when warranted, only at the correct life-cycle stage, and using the least-toxic effective product registered for that pest in BC. We do not apply calendar-based spray programs. Many infestations can be managed with mechanical removal, dormant oils, or targeted trunk injections rather than broad-area spraying.

04What is the bronze birch borer and how do I treat it?

Bronze Birch Borer (Agrilus anxius) is a beetle whose larvae tunnel under birch bark, cutting water and nutrient flow. Signs: D-shaped exit holes in bark, yellowing canopy starting at branch tips, dieback of upper crown. Treatment: preventive trunk injections of registered insecticide are most effective before 30% canopy loss. Trees with more than 50% dieback typically cannot be saved. Early diagnosis is critical — call us if you notice any of these signs.

05How do I protect my trees from pests long-term?

The best pest protection is a vigorous, unstressed tree. Our plant health care program includes soil decompaction, mulching to the drip line, proper pruning to remove deadwood, and correcting drainage issues — all of which improve tree resistance. For high-value trees in pest-active areas, we offer preventive treatment programs on an annual or seasonal schedule.
