What You Need to Know
Tree transplanting in Vancouver lets you keep a valued tree when a renovation, new construction, or landscaping plan would otherwise mean removing it. Aesthetic Tree's ISA-certified arborists assess whether a tree is a realistic candidate, then handle the work in stages — root pruning months ahead where possible, lifting with an intact root ball, replanting at the correct depth, and the watering and staking that follow. Species, size, age, and season all affect the odds, and we give you an honest assessment before any work begins.

01
When Is a Tree a Good Candidate for Transplanting?
Tree transplanting Vancouver property owners ask about usually comes up when a renovation, an addition, or a new landscape plan puts an established tree in the wrong place. The first question our ISA-certified arborist answers is whether the tree is a realistic candidate at all — because not every tree survives a move.
Younger, smaller trees transplant far more reliably than mature ones. A tree under about 10 to 15 cm trunk diameter, with a compact root system and good health, has strong odds. Large mature trees can sometimes be moved, but the cost rises sharply and the survival risk with it. Species matters too — some trees regenerate roots readily, others resent disturbance.
We give you a straight assessment. If a tree is unlikely to survive the move, we say so, and we will talk through whether tree removal with fresh tree planting is the better investment rather than spending heavily on a transplant that fails.
How the Tree Transplanting Process Works
Done properly, transplanting is staged rather than rushed. Where the timeline allows, we root-prune months in advance — cutting a defined radius around the tree so it grows a dense mass of new feeder roots inside the future root ball. A tree that has been root-pruned ahead of time moves with a far better chance of survival.
On moving day, the crew lifts the tree with as much intact root ball as the species and size require, protects the roots from drying out, and replants promptly at the correct depth — the root flare level with grade, never buried. We firm the soil, water in thoroughly, mulch the base, and stake the tree only if it genuinely needs support.
The first one to two years are when a transplant lives or dies. We provide a written aftercare schedule covering deep watering through the dry season, mulch maintenance, and what to watch for — and ongoing tree care keeps the tree on track once it is re-established. Our blog on transplanting trees covers what to expect through that recovery window.

Why Use an ISA-Certified Arborist to Transplant a Tree?
Transplanting looks like digging and replanting, but the survival of the tree turns on details that are easy to get wrong. Cutting the root ball too small, moving the tree in the wrong season, replanting too deep, or skipping the first summer's watering will each quietly kill a tree weeks or months later.
An ISA-certified arborist understands the tree's biology — how it stores energy, when it is dormant, how quickly it regrows roots — and times and sizes the move accordingly. Where a transplant is part of a development project, we can also prepare the arborist report the municipality requires. That knowledge is the difference between a tree that re-establishes and one that declines slowly until it has to be removed anyway.
Our crews also handle the move safely. Lifting a tree with an intact root ball involves real weight and, for larger trees, equipment near structures and lines. We are $5M insured and WorkSafeBC compliant, and we coordinate with BC Hydro for any work near power lines.
