What You Need to Know

Aesthetic Tree removes trees across Burnaby under Tree Bylaw 1996 (Bylaw No. 10482). Burnaby's permit rules catch people out because the threshold depends on species AND on whether the property is under a development application: without development, a permit is needed for conifers 30 cm or larger and deciduous trees 45 cm or larger; with a development application, ANY tree 20 cm or larger is protected. Removal also triggers replacement planting — one, two or three trees depending on the size of what came down. Our ISA-certified arborists measure the tree, confirm which rule applies, prepare the permit and plan the replacements. Operating since 2007, $5M insured, WorkSafeBC covered.

Why Choose Aesthetic Tree for Tree Removal in Burnaby?

Burnaby's tree stock is unusually varied for a single municipality. Burnaby Mountain and the Deer Lake area hold mature Douglas fir and Western red cedar on sloped, tight-access lots. Burnaby Heights and Capitol Hill are full of large deciduous maples on narrow older lots. Metrotown, Brentwood and Edmonds mix dense development with retained mature trees that are often under active development permits — which changes the permit rule entirely. Our ISA-certified arborists assess the tree, the access and the bylaw position before quoting.

We take on the removals that need rigging rather than felling: cedars that cannot come down in one piece over a neighbouring fence, trees within reach of BC Hydro conductors, and storm-damaged stems on sloped Burnaby Mountain properties. Every removal follows ANSI Z133 safety standards and ISA best management practices. Where a tree is an immediate hazard, our 24/7 emergency tree service responds the same day.

Aesthetic Tree has operated in the Lower Mainland since 2007. We carry $5M liability insurance, our crews are covered by WorkSafeBC, and our arborists hold ISA certification and TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification). Burnaby's Tree Bylaw — The Threshold Most People Get Wrong

Burnaby does not use a single diameter threshold, and this is where most homeowners are caught out. Under Tree Bylaw 1996 (Bylaw No. 10482), on a property NOT subject to a development application a tree cutting permit is required for any conifer 30 cm (12 inches) or greater in diameter, and any deciduous tree 45 cm (18 inches) or greater. On a property that IS subject to a development application, the threshold drops to 20 cm (8 inches) for any tree, regardless of species. A cedar and a maple on the same lot can therefore sit in completely different permit positions.

That development-status distinction matters enormously in Burnaby, where Metrotown, Brentwood and Edmonds are under sustained densification. A tree that needed no permit last year can become protected the moment a development application is filed on the property. We check the current status of the lot before advising, because getting this wrong means removing a protected tree without a permit.

Diameter is measured at breast height (DBH). If you are unsure which category your tree falls into, we measure it during the free estimate and confirm the bylaw position in writing before any work is scheduled. Where a removal needs supporting documentation, our TRAQ-qualified arborists prepare a formal arborist report covering the tree's condition, risk rating and recommended action. replacement trees: what burnaby requires after a removal

03

Replacement Trees: What Burnaby Requires After a Removal

Burnaby ties replacement planting directly to the size of the tree removed. A tree 8 to 12 inches in diameter requires 1 replacement tree. A tree 12 to 24 inches requires 2 replacement trees. A tree 24 inches or more requires 3 replacement trees. This is a real cost and space consideration that is often left out of a removal quote — and it is the part homeowners discover after the tree is already down.

The replacements carry their own specifications. Coniferous replacements — Douglas fir, Hinoki cypress, spruce — must be a minimum of 2 metres high. Deciduous replacements such as redbud, dogwood, maple or magnolia must have a minimum 5 cm trunk diameter. Two fruit trees count as one replacement tree, or a single fruit tree counts fully if it is 5 cm or greater in diameter. Palms must be a minimum of 2 metres high. Replacements must be planted on private property with at least 3 metres between trunks, and must be allowed to grow to full maturity.

We plan replacement planting into the removal from the start, so the permit application, the species choice and the available planting positions on your lot are resolved together rather than becoming a problem afterwards. Our tree planting service handles the replacements, and stump grinding clears what is left below grade so the new tree has somewhere to go.

What Does Tree Removal Cost in Burnaby?

Tree removal costs in Burnaby follow 2026 Metro Vancouver market rates. Small trees under 30 feet typically range from $400 to $900. Medium trees between 30 and 60 feet commonly range from $1,200 to $3,000. Large trees over 60 feet, or those requiring crane assistance, often range from $2,500 to $6,000 or more. These figures are based on CHBA BC regional market data and represent industry averages. Actual costs vary based on project scope, materials and site conditions. Contact Aesthetic Tree for a personalized assessment.

The cost drivers in Burnaby specifically are access and slope. A 60-foot cedar on a flat Willingdon Heights lot with rear-lane access is a straightforward job. The same tree on a sloped Burnaby Mountain property with no vehicle access has to be rigged down piece by piece and carried out, which takes materially longer. Proximity to BC Hydro lines adds a coordination step: any work within 3 metres of a conductor requires their line crew to attend, and they typically need 1 to 2 business days' notice.

We provide free, no-obligation on-site estimates for every Burnaby job. The written quote covers crew, equipment, permit preparation, debris removal and site cleanup, with no hidden surcharges. Budget for the replacement trees the bylaw will require — we include those in the estimate so the number you see is the real total, not just the felling cost.

Have a specific question?

01Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Burnaby?

It depends on the species and on whether your property is under a development application. Under Burnaby Tree Bylaw 1996 (Bylaw No. 10482), on a property NOT subject to a development application you need a tree cutting permit for any conifer 30 cm (12 inches) or greater in diameter, and any deciduous tree 45 cm (18 inches) or greater. On a property that IS subject to a development application, any tree 20 cm (8 inches) or greater is protected regardless of species. Diameter is measured at breast height. This split catches people out — a cedar and a maple on the same lot can have different permit requirements. We measure and confirm the bylaw position in writing during the free estimate.

02How many replacement trees do I have to plant in Burnaby?

Burnaby ties replacement planting to the size of the tree removed: a tree 8 to 12 inches in diameter requires 1 replacement tree, 12 to 24 inches requires 2 replacement trees, and 24 inches or more requires 3 replacement trees. Replacements must be planted on private property with at least 3 metres between trunks and allowed to grow to full maturity. We plan this into the removal quote from the start so it is not a surprise after the tree is down.

03What size do replacement trees need to be in Burnaby?

Coniferous replacements such as Douglas fir, Hinoki cypress or spruce must be a minimum of 2 metres high. Deciduous replacements such as redbud, dogwood, maple or magnolia must have a minimum 5 cm trunk diameter. Two fruit trees count as one replacement tree, or a single fruit tree counts fully if it is 5 cm or greater in diameter. Palm trees must be a minimum of 2 metres high. All replacements go on private property with at least 3 metres spacing between trunks.

04How much does tree removal cost in Burnaby, BC?

Tree removal in Burnaby follows 2026 Metro Vancouver market rates: small trees under 30 feet typically $400 to $900, medium trees 30 to 60 feet typically $1,200 to $3,000, and large trees over 60 feet or requiring crane assistance typically $2,500 to $6,000 or more. These figures are based on CHBA BC regional market data and represent industry averages. Actual costs vary based on project scope, materials and site conditions. Contact Aesthetic Tree for a personalized assessment. In Burnaby specifically, slope and vehicle access are the biggest cost drivers — a sloped Burnaby Mountain lot with no truck access costs materially more than the same tree on a flat lot with a rear lane. Budget for replacement trees as well, since the bylaw requires them.

05Can you remove a tree near power lines in Burnaby?

Yes. Any tree work within 3 metres of a power line requires BC Hydro coordination — this applies throughout Burnaby and all of BC. Our arborists follow WorkSafeBC regulations for electrical proximity work. BC Hydro sends a line crew to de-energize or protect the conductors during the removal, and they typically need 1 to 2 business days' notice. We arrange that directly and build it into your project timeline, so you do not need to contact BC Hydro yourself.

06Are Aesthetic Tree's arborists certified and insured to work in Burnaby?

Yes. Aesthetic Tree has operated in the Lower Mainland since 2007. We carry $5M comprehensive liability insurance, all crew are covered by WorkSafeBC, and our arborists hold ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certification along with TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification). We work throughout Burnaby including Brentwood, Metrotown, Edmonds, Burnaby Heights, Capitol Hill, Deer Lake, Burnaby Mountain and Big Bend. Before any tree company starts work on your property, confirm all three: liability insurance, WorkSafeBC coverage, and ISA certification.
